In 1100101 the crew of the enterprise make a pit stop at a starbase where the computer will undergo a reconditioning/optimization by a rather enigmatic and quirky species known as the Binars. Binars are almost literally joined at the hip. Most of the crew choose to disembark and enjoy the many pleasures a starbase may have to offer.

A few crew members remain on board, but are soon ushered off the ship by a malfunction which causes a red alert. Captain Picard and Commander Riker don't notice this red alert because they are distracted on the holodeck by a rather delightful holographic person named Minuet.

Riker and Picard finally catch on that the red alert was faked in order to get the Enterprise to the Binar's homeworld. With the Binars subdued because of some malfunction in their connection to their homeworld, Picard and Riker must figure it out in a short amount of time.

I feel like sometimes people these days look at TV from the past and apply today's lens to it, which I feel isn't fair. For example, it has been mentioned on both your pods that it isn't uncommon for the crew of the Enterprise to meet an alien race or visit an alien planet, and then we never see those aliens or that planet again. Ever.

But so what? That's how TV was back then. There was no over-arching narrative, so why would we see aliens twice? There's no real payoff other than "Oh, hey, remember them?"

Also, if you're writing a plot involving Binars, let's say, I feel that narrows down what you can write about, because the Binars are so specifically different. But if you present an all new alien in the next episode, you can make up any damn thing you want about that alien and give the good viewers a new thing to chew on.

All this being said, I forgot how terrible some of these Season 1 episodes are - the podcast is so much better than the show in many cases. I wouldn't give this episode a 5 like you both did (just because I'm petty and find the Binars annoying). I wasn't going to watch it until I remember Minuet was in it, and her scenes with Riker and Picard are great. Good pod, guys!

I hear you! I do try to remain within the context of the time, after all I lived it and as we discuss in later seasons TNG actually does a pretty good job of creating a deeper connection through out its own stories. Thanks so much man, I'll be contacting you very soon!
